Upon the death of their parents in 1911, Walter and Gilbert were placed in the Brace Farm School for boys in Valhalla, New York.
On July 17, 1913, a group of sixteen children, between the ages of 1½ to 16, were placed on an Orphan Train leaving from New York City to Pratt, Kansas. 
They were taken to the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Wright. Their stay there was only six months when Mr. Wright sold his farm and moved to Pennsylvania.
On January 24, 1914 Gilbert and Walter were brought to Allamakee County, Iowa. 
They were taken in by siblings, Daniel Kelly and Nettie Kelly (listed on 1930 census as adopted children, but it is reported that they were not adopted by the Kellys)
Walter passed away at the age of 33 from multiple sclerosis
